What would you do?

Greetings Superheroes!
Our power is out and has been since the late afternoon yesterday. We have spent most of the day at the Local Grocer Cafe – about 11 miles from our house. We live up in Jackson, New Hampshire, which is in the White Mountain region, and is susceptible to full on winter weather! The winter had been pretty mild so far, but this week that all changed… We barely made it off our road this morning, the car was slipping and sliding all over the place. But we did make it, and came to get some work done here at the cafe.
Luckily, we have a propane stove that works without electricity, so we’re good there. But our house is built with radiant floor heating, with only one fireplace so it’s not exactly designed for this.
Ideally, our home that we will be creating in the future will be nearly off the grid, equipped with a wood stove for heating, a root cellar for food, indoor grown sprouts, outdoor greenhouse grown vegetables, plenty of fermented foods, animals to feed us, and life to entertain us. At the moment our rental home isn’t exactly equipped for minimal fossil fuel usage, and we are inspired for the future!
I am writing this, because I am curious what all of us/you/we would do, if you had to sustain yourself with your surroundings? What if you weren’t able to get imported organic produce through the winter? Or at anytime of the year? Could you rely on family farms around you to feed you all year round? If you are vegan or vegetarian, would you be able to embrace animal fat and protein to sustain you? Seeds and nuts are imported from all over.
I’m not sure what kicked in the inspiration, but over the last year, I have been so inspired to import less and less. There comes a point, if it hasn’t for you already, when you realize – You get all of your organic produce from a store, you order all of your supplements other things from the internet, and you’ve never met even one person that produces the food you’re eating. It’s quite an eye-opener when you realize that one. I’ve even lessened my supplement/superfood intake, because I’m inspired to get my nutrients locally. When we grow our own food this spring/summer/fall, we’ll be dumping loads of kelp fertilizer and ocean water in with the soil, to get even more minerals and nutrients than we would otherwise. I feel that I am getting an incredible amount of nutrients from the animal fat I intake. Fat soluble vitamins, other vitamins, minerals, ample protein, and saturated fats. This is the case for me, personally. It may not be the case for everyone.
My mom was pondering aloud the other day – I wonder what would have happened if gas prices had really risen to the expected prices? Remember a couple years ago when the gas prices went really high? And they were expected to go higher? Well, they never did, and the prices became “normal” again. Whatever that means. Well, we had an interesting conversation about that. What if that had really happened? We probably wouldn’t be buying things that had traveled a long way to get to us, because they would be priced so high.
What do you think? I love meeting the people who have grown my food with their hands and actually shaking their hand. I love playing with the animals they’re feeding us with and meeting them as well. Even better, I love being able to grow the food myself! I’ve seen some frightening things going on with produce in transport. Huge flats of lettuce uncovered on the back of a truck speeding down Highway 5 in California. Amazing amounts of air pollution in Egypt, where a ton of organic produce comes from. You just never know what is coming from where. There are different standards for organic and non-organic in every country. Also, in every state! I read today that between 1950 and 1970, something like 4 million pounds of DDT was dumped into the ocean off of California. This in no longer a legal thing to do. But what if somewhere in some place, some other harmful chemical that is yet to be named, is being dumped in a field or an ocean somewhere? Today? Yikes! No thanks!
Well, anyway. This post is just intended to get you thinking. What percentage of your daily food/superfood/supplement intake is imported? What percentage is from 100 miles of where you live? What measures would you take to change any of what you’re already doing?
I’m just curious, honestly. I know I’m not alone in this!
And I want to stimulate the thinking in all of you to assess where your food comes from.
So, what would you do?
Blessings,
Goji
We made this video the day after I wrote this post:

Yeah I feel the same way too. I am using more local foods and our family’s goal is to live off our own garden some day. I also think that food co-ops with your local area, we call them community garden’s here are vital. That way you are sharing food with each other and there is a cyclical relationship between the food, the growers’ etc.
I love this, great vids! Being someone who lived on the streets in my teens and being trained in martial arts, thinking about my survival, and thriving in the toughest conditions, is an ongoing fun and interesting hobby. My husband has been designing an eco house and we have been scouting a piece of land, and in the meantime, are feeling guided to make little changes that can create more sustainability, peace and longevity. Enjoying all the information out there and especially connecting with beautiful beings like yourselves who are out of the dogma and into the love for self, each other and the planet. xoShakaya
Thanks for this post! Scott and I (sootysax) talk about these issues all the time and it’s great to see other’s feelings about this journey, thanks for sharing!
Nice video~! I really love hearing and see what you all are doing and I think it’s just wonderful that you are helping more and more people segue into a more sustainable approach to diet and lifestyle — vegan or non-vegan and vegetarian or non-vegetarian.
For a while there I was really kind of worried that food choices might become the new “religions,” vegans fighting with vegetarians fighting with omnivores, etc. — and certainly there HAS been enough of THAT already…!
I am still not sure if I will end up being vegan, vegetarian or omnivorous after starting life on a crazed and crazy way of eating and traveling a very bumpy path to learning to eat for me to live in health and happiness and to eat for the Planet to live in health and happiness.
You two are an ADORABLE couple by the way!!! =)
Michele
Nice!! Thank you ladies for the great feedback!
It’s a crazy world out there I tell ya… We are making a move to York, Maine soon, where we will have much more community and more community gatherings than what we have now.
We’re super excited!
Thanks for letting me speak my mind! It’s definitely a challenge to break out of a certain paradigm when that’s all people expect of you.
Blessings…
PS – thanks Michele, I like to think we are an adorable couple myself
